Water heater installation: what's included vs possible extras

5 min read

A good quote states clearly what's included. Here's how we separate a standard code-compliant install from useful options — so install day stays predictable.

What's usually included

  • The water heater you chose (Giant, Bradford White, etc.)
  • Removal and recycling of the old tank
  • Code-compliant water connections
  • New safety relief valve
  • Discharge pipe (drop tube) at the proper height
  • Shut-off valve on the cold water line
  • Startup and leak check

The electrical panel must already be compliant (wire and breaker sized for the capacity). If an electrical upgrade is needed, a master electrician handles it — we tell you beforehand, not on the doorstep.

Parts often added (depending on your home)

  • Drain pan: required or strongly recommended depending on floor type and level
  • Leak detector: optional, useful in a rarely visited spot even with a pan
  • Hot-side shut-off valve: optional, handy to isolate the unit
  • Expansion tank: only if the code requires it at your place (see below)

Expansion tank: the code's 3 cases

Quebec plumbing code requires thermal-expansion protection when the system is “closed.” In practice, that usually means one of these is present:

  1. A check valve (backflow check)
  2. A backflow preventer
  3. A pressure-reducing valve on the supply
You don't need to diagnose this yourself. We check on site. If it isn't required, we don't push it.

Other situations that can add work

  • Moving the unit or heavily reworking the piping
  • Connecting the pan to a missing or non-compliant floor drain
  • Hard access (tight basement, several floors without clearance)
  • Gas-to-electric conversion (electrician + securing the gas line)

How we avoid bad surprises

We ask the right questions first: floor level, drain, age of the setup, photos if possible. The quote lists the model, what's included, and recommended options with prices. To see what a compliant install looks like, also check the interactive diagram in our help center.
